Every so often I find myself in the fortunate position of being able to give something back which is absolutely fine with me.
I DJ’d a charity fund raiser for the Starlight charity who provides support for 500,000 seriously and terminally ill children…when I was asked how much it would be to provide a disco, I was more than happy to give my services for free – it’s a worthwhile cause and all I am doing is giving up my time, not really a hardship especially when you consider the challenges that families face on a daily basis when dealing with a seriously ill child.
The disco was a great success with the event raising over £1,000 which is even more impressive given the event clashed with Madness in concert at Fratton Park, the Capital Summertime Ball and other local events; it seems this weekend is the busiest weekend of the social calendar this year so far so to get people there is an achievement and to raise over £1,000 is tremendous.
I was asked to play on for a few extra songs, which I was more than happy to do, and finished with the iconic song ‘I will survive’ by Gloria Gaynor which was song along to with great gusto. Loads and loads of positive feedback from people saying how good I was and that I was ‘amazing’ and the events manager at the venue took my details for any future functions. Ironically enough the events manager told me that I was the second best DJ they’d ever had and turned out that the top DJ was the guy who taught me everything I know so can’t be too upset about that!
It was a fabulous evening with great guests, a worthy cause and I have to make special mention to the people who organised the event as they are giving up their time to raise funds – they should be proud of their efforts and I hope I get the opportunity to support this cause again.
